Promotion of best international standards and practice in the hospitality and food processing sectors

The Nepal Bureau of Standards & Metrology (NSBM) , supported by the  EU TPSD project  held a  2nd public awareness workshop  on  Jan 8th 2019 in Chitwan, to promote use of international management systems standards in the hospitality and food processing sectors. The target audience are hotels, restaurants and food processing enterprise.  The use of management systems standards will strengthen the quality environment and capacity of the Nepali food processing to produce sustainable food products in line with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 – ‘Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns’ and to compete more effectively in export markets. It will also strengthen the capacity of the hospitality sector to provide environmentally friendly sustainable services to attract more tourists and investment.   The workshop was attended by 35 persons including 5 women  mostly from the private sector including representatives from the Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN) and the Restaurant and Bar Association of Nepal (REBAN).  A  3rd workshop will be held in Nuwakot in the Kathmandu valley on Thursday  Apr 11th  2019.   The standards promoted  included:

  • ISO 9001:2015 ‘Quality Management System Requirements’;
  • ISO 14001:2015 ‘Environmental management systems -- Requirements with guidance for use’;
  • ISO 22000:2018 ‘Food safety management systems -- Requirements for any organization in the food chain’
